I've been absent from the blogging world for a while! I have many things in the queue to post, so be looking over the next couple weeks for a variety of fun pictures.

Later in August I will be posting some pictures of my upcoming wedding in South Africa. You heard me right, South Africa - the country! I wish I could have seen a World Cup game there, but I must admit, it will be nice not to have the loads of people everywhere and the country should be in good shape after all the preparations for the FIFA World Cup.

You'll not only see some great wedding photos, but there is also a 3-day safari planned! In other words, it's an amazing opportunity and I am very much excited!

Ok, on to the topic of today. You might have read the title and wondered. Didn't he mean 4th of July Fireworks? Well, we meet up with family to watch fireworks at a golf course. It is always on the 3rd and is a fun time of music, food, games, and of course time with family and friends. Last year was our first year, and I didn't take the camera (unfortunately, because last years show was incredible).

This year I decided to get some photos. I should have grabbed some video too, but didn't think of it. Here is the equipment used:

Ok, I'm not moving back to Cali or anything. Just coming back for a week and a half full of photography! I'm really excited!

I'll be there October 14-26. Here are the shoots so far:

-A charity golf tournament for one of my favorite non-profits (and former employer) World Vision International.

-A beautiful wedding in Temecula wine country!

-An amazing wedding in Pasadena!

-A few head-shot sessions around LA and OC

Obviously, I'm excited to see my family and friends as well! I've been in Colorado for a little over 3 months now and I have to tell you, I really don't miss California at all (except for family and friends of course!). Fall is here in Colorado and I love it! Snow on the Rockies, leaves changing, a chill in the air letting us know that winter is right around the corner. It's great!

I'm looking forward to my California visit. It will be busy, but great fun with great people. For those in California, I hope to see you when I'm there!

Behind door #2...A New Car!!

I would have loved to have won a new car in a game show, but that didn't happen. I did however purchase a new vehicle last night.

Being a new Colorado resident, I realized I needed a heavier all wheel drive or 4x4 vehicle. Our Volkswagen Passat just wasn't cutting it (in more ways than one).

Today I had to take the car out and snap a few photos. It is black of course, I am Brian Black you know!

Oh, and if you need a Ford or Chevy and are in Colorado, go see Adam over at Burt Ford in Parker!

This is our new 2009 Ford Edge SEL AWD. One of the great features is the Sync system. It is an amazing voice activated system for controlling your bluetooth enabled phone and has incredible iPod integration. I highly recommend it!

High Fashion Shoot - Julie

Well, I decided to do a spontaneous high fashion shoot. The lovely Julie was kind enough to oblige and as you can see, we had a lot of fun.

I think this is something that will definitely be happening again. I would love to get into fashion photography, but my recent move from Los Angeles to Denver doesn't really look like a step in the right direction. Who knows, maybe I can help make Denver a fashion capital? ....stop laughing, anything is possible!

Well, it's hard to believe my little niece is already 1 year old! I'm sure going to miss this little peanut when I move to Colorado, but I'm sure there will be lots of visits.

Beginner Photography workshop

I love the Beach

I went to Laguna Beach on Saturday. My wife and I met up with our cousin and a few friends for brunch at Las Brisas (which I highly recommend).

I spent the rest of the day bumming around the beach until later that night when we went to celebrate a friends birthday and see the band Upstart play at Mozambique. If you've never seen them play, you're missing out!

I was really looking forward to this wedding. The groom, Jody, and I were in a performing group together a while back and when I heard he wanted me to photograph his wedding, I was honored to. It was a bonus having it at the Ritz Carlton Laguna Niguel! What a beautiful place. His bride, Kate, was beautiful and so great to get to know better. This couple really knows how to have fun (as you'll see further down).

Kate's dress was really stunning!

And of course the shoes and flowers were great!

Put it all together and you have a beautiful bride.

Jody was looking sharp. I really dug his suit!

You've gotta love the little things. Those stories between two people that bring back memories of times together.

When you put these two together, they sure know how to have fun and laugh. It was so fun being with them on their special day.

It had been overcast the days leading up to the wedding. That day the sun came out literally minutes before the ceremony and we were blessed with a beautiful sunset while we were taking pictures.

So, we went down to the beach to take some pictures. These were on the way down.

We got to the sand and the fun continued!

On our way back up, we saw some surfers and one of them graciously lent their surfboard.

Did I mention the sunset was amazing?

I love being able to experience other's love for each other. This picture says it all. What a wonderful day! Congrats Jody and Kate!

Napa

My wife and I visited some family up in Corning a little over a week ago. We met up with some friends in Napa on the way up to do a little wine tasting and have dinner. It was not quite spring there, but Napa is always beautiful. I only took nine pictures while we were there (can you believe it?)

Ember - The Swimmer

So my golden retriever Ember loves to swim. It has been rainy the past couple days, but today the sun was out and we decided to let her have some fun in the pool - we're having her fixed next week (shhh - don't tell her!).

She loves to just jump right in the water and swim. I decided to try and get a few shots of her playing around. She certainly is a ball of energy.

She's in there somewhere, I promise!

She decided to get Loriann wet. What you don't see is Loriann holding her laptop as far away as she can!

Las Vegas Recap and Colorado Update

Well, the trip to Vegas proved to be less productive than expected. I had this silly problem with my heart and was in the hospital for 2 out of the 3 days of the WPPI (Wedding and Portrait Photographers) conference. I did get to go see Jessica Claire's talk. She really knows what she is talking about. She also has a couple very cool products. Check them out here.

After the conference, Loriann drove out and we drove out to Colorado to look at properties. Well, we found "the one" and put an offer in right away. It was accepted and we close the beginning of April. Colorado, here we come!

It snowed while we were there, which was fun. I took these pictures at Loriann's aunt and uncle's where we stayed.

The drive through the Rockies was incredible, but I was so determined to drive as far as possible each day that I didn't take any photos...next time for sure!

Things are very busy now with prepping to move, going to Napa this weekend, a shoot with My Nerd Girl next weekend, then a wedding at the Ritz in Laguna the following weekend. I am posting a few blogs today to catch up.

Vegas - WPPI

So, I have some catching up to do in the blogosphere. We'll start with a trip to Vegas last week for the WPPI convention (Wedding and Portrait Photographers).

I rode out with Troy Grover and Cory Jones. We got a late start to Vegas on Sunday night. On the way I had some heart trouble - more on that in another blog.

Well we got in around 2am and checked into the New York New York Hotel and Casino. Much to our surprise they upgraded us. Not just any upgrade...the penthouse suite!

You know you have a nice room when it is named. Our room was "The Drake".

Blue Eyes - Samantha

Samantha and I had a great time taking photos! I've had the privilege of singing with this talented soprano on a few occasions. She is currently starring in a show at the Candelight Pavillion.

Her eyes are amazing, and no, they're not contacts. I also tried a few different post processing techniques. Let me know what you think.

Of course you might think I'm partial about how cute my niece is. But really, you can't deny the cuteness as portrayed by these images I took today. Her first tooth has come in, and there is no denying that she likes to show it off.

To her, I am uncle B. Luckily her dad is also an avid shooter, so she is quite comfortable in front of the camera. I sure am going to miss her when I move to Colorado in May. You're sure to find more pictures of her here over the next few months! Enjoy.

I can't believe it happened to me

Yesterday I decided to grab some lunch and eat it in my car parked on the street with my window down. It was a beautiful day after all.

I finish my lunch and decide to check out Facebook on my iPhone. All of a sudden I notice someone walking up alongside my car wearing all black. At this point, there is nothing I can do. The window is all the way down and the engine is off.

He comes up and begins to tell me to give him the "stuff". I have the "stuff". I respond, "what are you talking about? I don't understand what you're saying". This goes on for about a minute. (I'm trying to hold off long enough for my phone to lock).

He finally says he wants the iPhone and says that fools get smoked for not giving it up. As he says this, he lifts up his shirt some, like he has a gun. I didn't see anything, but at that point didn't want to risk some stupid kid doing something really stupid so I gave him my phone.

He then proceeded to run the opposite way down the street as a truck that was parked on the other side of the street rolled alongside him. It turned a corner and the kid jumped into the passenger seat in the La Verne Library parking lot.

I quickly made a U-turn and thus began the pursuit. I just wanted to get close enough to get the license plate. By the time I got on the same street as they were on, there were multiple cars in between us. No such luck! They turned down some side street off D St, but I could never locate them again.

While driving around looking for them, I spotted a La Verne Police Motorcycle Unit and flagged him down. Told him the story and he took off looking for them while the crime unit came to meet me and get all the details.

They haven't been able to find them yet, and at this point I don't think there is any hope. There are many levels of frustration that come out of this.
1. The fact that some punk kid has the nerve to come up to my car and steal something from me when I'm not in a good position to do anything.
2. The phone is completely useless to him. It is totally locked down.
3. I just got the phone in early November 08 and AT&T would charge me $500 to replace it, which I can not afford at this point.

It's all lose-lose.

Of course the important thing is no one got hurt, yada yada. I'm still running through the scenario in my mind thinking of what I could have done differently.

Well, that was my Tuesday. Starting off 2009 in an exciting way I guess.

Oh, and if you see a slightly chubby punk hispanic kid about 19 riding around in a bright blue late model Toyota Tacoma extended cab holding a 16gb black iPhone 3G, let me know - and take down the license plate number!

Welcome 2009

This year I'm looking forward to truly connecting with people. Whether it be a simple hello and smile, or a more in depth conversation/interaction, and of course when creating images. I want to learn more about those in my life. I want to increase the proficiency in my craft. Most of all, I want to make an impact...

Pre-Move Visit to Colorado

In June of 2009, my wife and I are planning on moving to Colorado. I'm going to continue Brian Black Photography there and she is going to attend University of Colorado, Boulder for her Masters in Speech and Language Pathology.

In November we took a trip to Colorado to visit the campus. The first few days we were there, we were in south Denver staying with family and much to my disappointment, there were no more fall colored leaves on the trees. We had missed it by just a couple weeks. Shucks!

Fortunately when we drove up to Boulder to tour the campus we found that some of the trees there still had some leaves on them! Here are a couple images of them:

The Campus is really a beautiful place. The "Old Main" building was built in 1876 and housed the entire University for 8 years. It was renovated in 1982 and is now the CU Heritage Center. I liked the old spiral staircases on the east side of the building:

We learned about Ralphie, the school's mascot and how he runs around the football field before each home game. In fact, the 5 "Ralphie Runners" are varsity student-athletes. I caught a sweet moment of a student sitting with Ralphie:

We had a great time on our visit and look forward to our first out of state move together. While we love California, it will be nice to have clean air, four seasons, lower cost on pretty much everything, and the Rockies (mountains, not the team).

2009 will definitely be a year filled with new experiences. It's an exciting time!

Christmas wish list - A Photographer's Perspective

With Christmas coming next week, I though it would be good to give a few last minute gift ideas with a photographic theme. I've decided to divide these ideas into 3 categories: "Tight Budget" (under $50), "Moderate" (under $200), and "I've got money to blow!" (sky is the limit).

*If ordering online always be sure to check that the website you are using is reputable. In the photography realm, there can be some sketchy companies so just make sure you are careful.

Tight Budget:

-Micro fiber cloths - these are really inexpensive (around $3) and great stocking stuffers. Not just for pros and their pro lenses, you can use these on your point and shoot lenses as well! They also work great on that new flat panel TV you got on Black Friday!

-Flash accessories - Diffusers. These are great for making a more natural, less harsh look from your flash. You can find them for point and shoots and if you have an SLR, they have them for your pop up flash. Gary Fong makes a couple different ones and they are all less than $20.

-Photography books - Whether it is an instructional book, or a book featuring a photographers work, books are always a great gift! A couple on my list this year are Performance: Richard Avedon and Seen Behind the Scene - Mary Ellen Mark.

Moderate:

-Canvas Print - This is a great gift for anyone. The gallery wrap versions are especially nice as the picture wraps around the edges of the frame. There are many places to get these done (like Mpix & Shutterfly) and they range from $80 - $170 depending on size. Here is one I had done as a Christmas gift last year for my wife.

-Photo Printer - Let's face it, digital photography is now the norm, and while it has many advantages over the film days, we tend to keep our pictures either in the camera or on our computer. You will enjoy your images much more if you make an effort to print them out. If you are just interested in making 4x6 prints, check out the HP Photosmart A636. If you want a printer that can print up to 8.5 x 24, look at the HP Photosmart D7460.

-Trip to Catalina - Ok, if you're not in Southern California, this might not work in this price range, but this is always a great idea (If you live other places, you can always substitute with a local destination) Round trip tickets on Catalina Express run about $70 a person and the island has a lot to offer, both photographically and not. Other great outing options in Southern California are the Huntington Library and Descanso Gardens and many many more.

I've Got Money to Blow!

-The latest Digital SLR complete with a set of pro lenses - for me this would be a Nikon D3 ($4,100) and the 14-24mm f/2.8 ($1500), 24-70mm f/2.8 ($1500), 70-200mm f/2.8 ($1600), and the 200-400mm f/4 ($5000). Well, I did say this was the sky is the limit section, so what's 14k right? At least I didn't say the new D3x ($8,000 just for the body). B&H Photo is always a great place to buy a variety of photography and electronics gear!

-Photo Safari - How about a 15 day photo safari to Kenya? It's $8700 a person + flight to Nairobi. This would be a once in a lifetime experience I'm sure and I have always wanted to do this. My wife has had the opportunity to go to Africa 3 times (Madagascar, South Africa, and the DRC), so I am way behind!

Whatever you do this Christmas season, remember to capture the memories with photographs and enjoy the moments with family and friends.

We shot at the Cal State Fullerton Arboretum. A beautiful place for sure. We had to be a bit creative with locations due to the bright sun during mid-day, but I am really happy with the results! Below are some of my favorites.

Trip to Huntington Library

I have a few things that need to be blogged! Maybe this is called blog backup? I haven't necessarily meant to stockpile these things, it's just that life has been busy with many things, which is never a good excuse, but I shall use it nonetheless.

In August, I had the pleasure of accompanying a professor of mine (he is the head of photography at Mount San Antonio College), Neil Chapman, to the Huntington Library in San Marino. We had a great time despite the poor light (direct sun in the middle of the day is not the greatest for flora/fauna shooting). Here is one of the many beautiful bonzai trees they had displayed in an area of the grounds.

There was a photography exhibit that we had both wanted to check out as well. It was called "This Side of Paradise: Body and Landscape in L.A. Photographs". I appreciated his thoughts and critiques on many of the images as well as his insight about the various photographers represented which he personally knew. We did manage to get a few good images in the buildings where they have sculptures and art displayed. I call this one "Take aim".

Summer at the Center 2008

These are images from this year's Summer at the Center show, held every year at the Orange County Performing Arts Center. It's an amazing show with kids who have had it rough in life. The Young American's Director and Choreographer, Bill & Robyn Brawley, teach these kids confidence, performance, compassion, peace, teamwork, discipline, and above all, love. It is an incredible show to take in!

A new day

After a pretty tough week and a half (personally), I decided I wanted to go out and watch and photograph the sunrise. Using beauty that God created to inspire me and put things in perspective.

Some people would go to a local park or trail for a nice view, but I decided I needed to see it from a really spectacular place. So, last night I decided I would wake up at 2:45 and make the 2+ hour drive to Joshua Tree National Park to watch the sunrise. Might as well go all out, right?

So it took a little longer than I anticipated and I ended up in a different spot than I had originally thought. I hadn't been to the park for maybe 14 years, so I did not know where a good spot might be. Maybe I should just call this a scouting trip for next time.

By the time I got up to a decent spot, the sun was just about to come over the top of the rock formations on the horizon. I was able to get a few shots that I am currently working on in photoshop.

I then drove on to another part of the park and got some other early sunlight shots.

Here are a few of the images I captured. Joshua Tree National Park is truly a spectacular landscape. If you haven't ever been, I encourage you to go there. I think a camping trip is in the future. Then I can have another go at the sunrise.

It sure was beautiful.

Sometimes when life throws so many things at you, it is nice when God gives you a sunset to remind you of the beauty He can create. This was Sunday night's beauty. I was out shooting a large format assignment (more on this later) and the sky just kept getting more and more spectacular.

It was an important reminder to me that when life is rough you need to keep your eyes open. There is beauty all around you.

My birthday is March 9 (tomorrow) and having the website up with some of my pictures is kind of like a birthday present. It is really nice to see it all come together. It is just the beginning!

You might be wondering (or maybe not) what I asked for for my birthday. Well, many photography related things. Mostly money towards a good tripod. Right now I think my choice is a Feisol 3442 for the legs and a Markins M10 ballhead. There are quite a few good comments on this combination on the Nikonians forums.

Feisol is a Taiwan company that makes carbon fiber tripods for less than the Gitzo's. I'm sure the quality is not quite as good, but the price difference for equivalent features is pretty substantial. If I decide to get this, I will post a review here.

Another request was one of Steve McCurry's books. I love his work.

Thank you for visiting. This is the first post of many as Brian Black Photography gets off the ground.

I hope that my images will bring a smile to you. In photography, I like to capture the true personality of the person I'm shooting. That look just after the cheesy smile we all give when put in front of a camera.

From kids to landscapes, weddings to wildlife, and portraiture to architecture, Brian Black Photography is not about one genre of photography. It is about life, love, struggle, beauty, and above all, that which is genuine.
